Exploring Mount Ned Nwoko Resort.

This past weekend, I got on a flight to Delta state with a few other media people to experience the Mount Ned Nwoko Resort / Tourism center in Idumuje Ugboko Village, Asaba.

Travel excites me, so any opportunity to tick off another state or country from my list is always welcomed. However, this trip was quite interesting because the tourism center and the village that houses it are both Mosquito/malaria-free, and has been so forever.

Having lived all my life in Lagos, I couldn’t imagine a place in Nigeria without mosquitoes/malaria and was quite intrigued. After all, aren’t those two things a part of our identity?.  As you can imagine, I was both excited and eager to experience this sorcery.

After a roughly 30mins drive from the city center in Asaba, we made it to the Mount Ned Nwoko Tourism center. Driving in, I was struck by how large and lush the landscape is. There is an expansive golf course, a swimming pool, tennis courts, and mini zoo amongst other things.

However, one of the notable features of this place is the Moroccan themed building – The lily house. We were given a tour of the house and it felt like stepping into a different era and setting.

It was obvious that the house was put together by someone with an appreciation for art and culture. The lily house has handcrafted walls, ceilings and furniture with intricate designs, a general Moroccan feel, and the most unique artifact collection.

I was expecting a “Resort” in the full sense of the word but unfortunately, this place currently has no accommodation and can only be visited as a day trip. Although it is free and open to all to visit.

After spending a night here with most of the time spent sitting outdoors, I am happy to confirm that there are in fact no mosquitoes here.

Apparently, the village of Idumuje Ugboko is the second-highest altitude in Nigeria after the Obudu Cattle ranch which explains the absence of mosquitoes.

Whatever the reason, it was nice to be able to enjoy being outdoors at night without worrying about being bothered by mosquitoes.

One of my favorite parts of the center (asides from the work of art that is the Lily house) is the tunnel. Although it triggered my claustrophobia, I couldn’t help but marvel at the brilliance of it all.

If you find your way to the Mount Ned Nwoko resort, you should definitely ask to see the tunnel.  It offers red earth walls with intricate eastern carvings. Mount Ned Nwoko also called Mount of Delta is owned by Prince Ned Nwoko, and we got to speak to him about the Ned Nwoko Foundation and malaria project, his love for arts and tourism as well.

Prince Ned Nwoko is currently championing the eradication of malaria in Africa with a focus on the development of an anti-malaria vaccine, and national mobilization for the fumigation of Nigeria with drones.

I think that this quite interesting and I’m definitely looking forward to a mosquito and malaria-free future for Nigeria and Africa as a continent.

We also learned that He is building the first sports university in Nigeria and were showed the site.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to visit the other landmarks in Asaba, so I definitely plan to revisit. I liked the calm in the air, unlike the hustle and bustle of Lagos.

Have you ever been to Asaba or the Mount Ned Nwoko Resort? What was your experience like?
