What I Learnt From The Live Your Dreams Africa Event

Thursday, 28 May 2015
Oh no no, not me!
Some of you might remember me going on in this post about how I missed the live your dream Africa event.
Well, my sister went (Oh that's my big sister up there) and I got her to share her experience and some of the lessons she went away with.
Let's dig in!

............................................................................

Being at Live Your Dreams Africa was one of the best decisions I've made in a while now. Every single story threw me into a trance, I was literally living my dreams there and then, (in my head tho). The event was huge and amazing, every adrenaline in my veins where pumped up, it was truly inspiring.

The event was convened by Bankole Williams and there were lots of amazing speaker's from various works of life : Uche Nnaji, TY Bello, M.I, Basket Mouth, Adenike Ogunlesi, Bankole Williams, Ehime Eigbe, OC Ukeje and Fela Durotoye who inspired us with stories, struggles, pains and determination.
Every speaker did a wonderful job, but sincerely basket mouth's story sent shivers down my spine. It takes a lot to smile in the face of bad days and I'm not talking about #badhairday kind of bad day, his where major!
Fela Durotoye ended the event with a sensational prayer for everyone present and Nigeria as a whole.

Now the paramount question is, do you have a dream? YES?  Then good, never let go of it, not a day should pass by without you advancing the cause of your dreams. So many of us must have gotten to a point in our lives where our dreams  actually choke us.....what does that tell you? It’s time to start living it.
Moving on, I would love to share the few pointers i learnt from the LYDA event:

- You do not need everything to be in place before you start something.

- Be persistent, fight for your dreams.

- Put all you have into achieving your dreams.

- FOCUS: Because every time you focus, you create blindness to the irrelevant. (Dives)

- Every gift (talent) is a blessing when its of value to someone else.

- It takes GUTS.

- If mere challenges can stop you, then you are certainly not ready to live your dreams.

- Don’t be frustrated by your frustrations, be inspired by them.

- Procrastination as we all know, kills.

- If you cannot die for your dreams, your dreams cannot live for you.

I'll love to end with this amazing scripture - Habakkuk 2:2-3....this is particularly for those who think it’s never going to come through, it will......just keep fighting!

               Then the Lord replied:
“Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it.
For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false.
Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.

Inspiration || Sock It Up

Monday, 25 May 2015
If you ask me what I think is the most underrated item in female wear, I'll most likely say a hat because well, duh but that's not why we are here. I recently discovered yet another hugely underrated and overlooked fashion item especially in female fashion and that guys, is why we are here!
What could I possibly be going on about? Why, the socks!
You didn't see think that coming did you? You probably think it belongs somewhere at the top of a male fashion items list right?

Hopefully after I'm done, you'll be able to recognize why the socks could just be the next best thing to happen after hats (of course).
It is an easy way to spice up your outfit and send off that vibe that you have a good knowledge of fashion/style even without actually knowing anything. Fake it till you make it right? I'm here for you!

How to wear it? Check out some of the ways I have worn it with some extra tips too:

The right foot wear is definitely key :
You can wear a socks with practically any type of foot wear but I find that male inspired flats like brogues, sneakers, ankle boots and of course pumps and the ankle strapped heels work pretty well.

- Keep it fun and playful  :
Pair it with your favourite romper to give off that fun vibe. You can wear bright coloured socks or frilly socks for that playful feel as well. This was one of my looks to Lagos fashion and design week here

- Or Classy, Your pick! :
Also you can tie color tones in with the rest of your outfit to give it a uniform look especially if you're not so bold to experiment with clashing prints just yet. I worked with nude and white in this post collaboration I did with the Grey brand

- If you’re a retro fan, not to worry!
You can also pair it with your array of vintage midi pleat skirts like I did in this post.

Feeling inspired already? Here are some more pictures culled from the net of fashionistas and fellow bloggers doing this thing all the justice in the world.
The socks and shoe trend is a trend for the bold, no question about that.
So what do you think?
Would you sock it up and try this?

Outfit || Cool In Culottes

Friday, 22 May 2015
Culottes this length? I think it counts!

What else looks like a skirt but isn't really a skirt? Oh yeah skorts, but I'm sure everyone can tell the difference. Culottes are all the rave now and this is one trend I'm definitely sold on. Why?
- I like the illusion it gives off. Now its a skirt.. Now its a pant/shorts
- It is super comfortable too..

I personally prefer the calf length/ barely at the ankle length ones like the one in this post on making your basics work for night time.
This one I'm wearing has been around way before this whole culottes rave came to be. I can't tell where my sister picked it up at but I'm my sister's keeper in every sense of the word - I keep her clothes too.
This is another look I pulled out of my capsule wardrobe - its nothing too fancy. The original idea was to wear it with flats for weekend chills or school runs but when I had to attend the Pandora store launch event and my indecisive spirit showed up again because I had quite a number of Outfit options (thanks again to le capsule wardrobe idea), I decided to stick with what I already had on. I threw on a hat and heels and hurried out the door.
What do you guys think?
How would you style this differently?

Pandora Store Launch Ikeja

Monday, 18 May 2015
Yet another weekend that didn't go as planned. I guess I should start going with the flow instead of making all these plans that end up crumbling anyways. *sigh*
I had planned to attend the Live your dreams africa event and a book fair afterwards on saturday while ending the weekend at the strip exbition in Re.Le but things started falling apart and I finally ended up at the Pandora store launch event in Ikeja city mall after a friend came to my aid.
Pandora is a global jewelry brand that is well known for their customizable charm bracelets, designer rings, earrings and necklaces.
I really really love their jewelries especially the neck chains, and rings, so simple and dainty! Perfect for layering! A bit pricy I think, but then it is quality and that might just be the unemployed youth in me speaking so never mind me.

The email I got mentioned that they were going to host media people and bloggers from 12-3pm before opening the doors of their store for people to shop so I kind of pictured meeting other bloggers / media people I know, maybe a little talk/ laughs here and there and a speech from the brand director. You know that type of thing but I got there a bit late anyways so I'm not sure if I missed that or it just didn't happen.
Yup It definitely happened and I missed all the fun! Just saw on cocophemmie's instagram that I missed yagazie, a couple of other bloggers I know, and Di'ja's perfomance.
They also all got charm bracelets from pandora *cries in missed opportunity*
Oh well, I got a really cute journal and cosmetic mirror in my goodie bag so ehrr... *side eye*

I was a bit bummed about my day though. Didn't really fancy just standing and looking around. See why its always so comforting going to these events with a friend?
Anyways, we can't move the ministry forward just from staying indoors and laying on the bed all day, can we? Right!
I ended up consoling myself with some kfc chicken and burger.
Oh and I met three of my blog readers, even though one called me 'Cassie DAVIES (why, oh Lord why?) , their warm compliments definitely brightened up my day. Thank you!

Hope your weekend went well?
What did you get up to?
I hope you all have a lovely week!

Evening/Dinner Style For The Not So Girly Girl

Hey Hey!
Wondering why the wide smile?
Did I mention I'm finally done with this med school struggle? I don't think I did but yes guys! God has been so faithful!
I was just rereading the post i wrote on the first day of final year on how its the beginning of the end for me and then seeing pictures of my classmates and I way back when the struggle started during our final dinner the other night, it hit me again that it has really been six years plus!! Mahn!

Speaking of dinner, that's the main reason why we are here right now.
My final year dinner was last Thursday and I didn't actually plan to go so when I finally changed my mind last minute, I had to put something together.
Now when you hear 'dinner party', almost everyone thinks long gowns and the likes but hey! What if you're not cut out for that sort of razzmatazz?
I'm not exactly a 'girly girl' but although my decision to not wear a dress to my dinner had nothing to do with that and everything to do with poor planning plus being too broke to go and buy an appropriate jaw dropping dress, I've been thinking there has to be a chic alternative to evening dresses and so I thought pants! Flares to be specific!
You dress them up with a nice slinky/dressy top, preferably strappy hand.
I'm wearing a simple camisole I got a while back and this wine red skirt-pants thing from my capsule wardrobe that I'm really not sure what its called.

If you're also like me : On a frugal journey and really can't afford to go get yourself a sparkly new dress, you can easily work with the basics you already have in your wardrobe, it just depends on how you pair it up to make it work!
Here is my tip!

- Accessorize, Accessorize!!  Throw on a statement neckpiece, stack up on the arm candy, nice heels and you're good to go!

Oh and if you ever feel out of place : Just remember this one thing - Everyone else might be Beyonce but you are Solange and when it comes to style, Solange is the real deal!

My makeup and photography was done by my friend Tarila who has her own beauty blog - www.taadah.WordPress.com

How To Make The Most Out Of Your Wardrobe || Capsule Wardrobe.

Saturday, 9 May 2015
I remember sometime early this year when I was feeling really uninspired, wearing pretty much the same things and thinking that I just had to introduce some new clothes into my wardrobe to get it going again but then one day I decided to sort through my clothes and I found out that I actually don't need new clothes or anything because I could still put together some really cool outfits from the ones I already have.
Simply put, I wasn't maximizing my wardrobe well.
I really don't have that much clothes or anything but I sure have discovered that mixing and matching and re-rocking is one way to maximize your wardrobe especially if you're like me with a not so big closet.
Another way is the capsule wardrobe way. I came across the concept of the capsule wardrobe sometime last year and thought it was a pretty good way to not only make the most of your wardrobe, but to save yourself the stress and time of thinking up what to wear everyday and get your creative juices flowing.

WHAT IS A CAPSULE WARDROBE?
It is a mini wardrobe made up of really versatile pieces that you totally love to wear or think are essentials and can be interchanged to create various looks.
Basically keeping a mini collection of clothes that you can mix up and wear for a particular period of time

HOW DOES IT WORK?
- You have to decide first of all what amount of clothes you want to work with and for how long you plan to work with the clothes you pick. Some people put together a capsule wardrobe for 3months, stick strictly to it and switch it up again for the next three months. Yours doesn't have to last for three months though, could be a capsule for two weeks only and then you switch up after. Depends on you.

- Yes, you'll have to finally sort through your clothes! Lol.
Sort through your closet and select clothes you think are essentials that you can mix and match to create different looks and to suit your lifestyle.
You can separate them into 'tops, bottoms, shoes etc to make it easier
Hang the selected clothes up while you keep the rest in a separate box

- And then you figure out how you plan to pair the clothes you selected in different ways to create different looks (here's where it helps with being creative) and wear those for the period of time you choose. You don't get to buy new clothes or wear other clothes from the ones you didn't select during that time. You work 'strictly' with what you brought out.

That's where my problem is....
Not being able to pick from my other clothes. I doubt I'll be able to adhere to that though! It feels like living with 'rules' and being restricted so In my case, I'll be using the capsule wardrobe idea thing just as a backbone to help maximize my wardrobe because I won't be sticking to all the rules of the game but the general concept is pretty much the same, just more flexible and more open to spontaneity.

Here's my own process.
I already had a mental picture of the clothes I wanted to use to create the capsule I.e so I wrote them down first, also wrote the different ways I'll mix them up.
I went through my wardrobe, selected them out and hung them up separate from the other clothes
Top : I picked my denim shirt, an orange and purple shirt, two retro print shirts, two waist coats, a black tee and my jack daniels muscle tee.
Bottom : I picked my black harem pant, a blue harem too, wine red and brown culottes, pink polka dot skirt, twenty six skirt and orange mini skirt.

In total, I was able to create more than ten different pairings using those and a whole lot more when I also incorporate other items from my other clothes plus the other pairings I already have in mind from the clothes I didn't select!
I hardly go out anyways so this is just to help make life easy for me to decide what to wear when I have events, dates or appearances to make/go for. I have my danshiki, numerous oversize shirts and denim pants for my day to day waka and school runs. Lol

I'll be sharing with you guys the various looks I'll create from my selections and I hope I'll be able to stick with it.

I hope you found this post helpful?!
What's your take on this capsule wardrobe thing?
Ever tried/Will you try it out sometime.
Also, what way do you use to make the most out of your wardrobe?
