Outfit || Vintage Goodness With An Urban Twist.

Monday, 30 March 2015
Hey Hey!
I know I've been away for a while but I explained why in this post.
I'm finally done with my finals and I must say it was two long really emotional weeks!
I'm just thankful to God for seeing me through and for the friends who stuck around constantly reassuring me, and of course you guys! the real MVP's! Now we begin the long wait to the release of the results.lol

Anyways, I've been feeling a bit out of the loop. You know when you stay away for a while and kind of find it hard getting back?
I wrote a post on getting your blogging mojo back, in case you've been stuck like me too and you can read that here.
This was actually kind of a last minute look. I planned to wear something else to church but somehow got a brain wave somewhere between midnight and day break and decided to try this on instead.
Wore it with flats to church though because when you are way taller than the three friends you went to church with, you obviously wouldn't want to make matters worse by wearing heels #tallgirlsproblems.
You all know I'm a sucker for vintage skirts and I've worn this skirt previously here but this time I tried to spice it up a bit by adding a sleeveless denim jacket (which is an urban fashion item) and doing something different with the footwear.
I'm rocking my fun lip color again and my dapmod shades.
Found this vintage mini bag in my mum's closet and decided to rescue it before it goes to ruin. My mum never wears these things! She just keeps storing them till something bad happens and they become unwearable. Smh
I'm obviously seriously digging the socks and shoes stuff. I've done it here, and here (all with different types of footwears).
What do you guys think of this look?

Weekend Casual || Kimono Inspired.

Saturday, 14 March 2015
Just a quick casual style post.
I did a style inspiration post on kimonos a while back and you can read that here
I've had this kimono for a while now, you might remember it from here where I gave a small, though unintentional tease peek.
A couple of you were requesting for the full outfit back then, although this isn't the same look as the one in that post but I figured its time I channeled my own kimono inspiration post and show you guys my version.
I have a proper "ghen ghen" look planned for this kimono though but in due time and waiting for the perfect occasion. He he

This look can be worn on a waka about weekend day, maybe to an art gallery?
That's where I planned to wear it to anyways, top it off with a bad ass wide brimmed hat and I feel you can fit into the aesthetics of the art gallery nicely.
Just somehow feels fitting because being stylish and "the arts" kind of go together yes?
You can wear this to a music festival type thing as well, and you can just switch up the skirt for shorts or a short red playsuit. I'll suggest the grandpa type shorts to make it a bit less basic.
Who is going for the gidi culture fest though?

Poetry || Rudy Francisco

Wednesday, 11 March 2015
This poem does the exact same thing to me everytime I read it! Everytime!
It starts off not too slow but I always reach my climax near the mid section (I highlighted these parts)
Its a poem that touches an important problem most youths face : low self esteem, not feeling good enough etc
Its particularly nostalgic because most of my high school days were spent feeling not good enough as well, undeserving of attention.
It took a while to grow out of that phase and I blogged about that here

Its 4:47am and my brain probably needs to rest but I just had to share this.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did and it touches a spot in your heart too.
Remember, You are good enough always!

Rudy Francisco - 17.
If you were to find an old calendar, strap it to a hospital bed
Tie it down by its week-ends, and then C-section the belly of 1999
You’d find the 17 year old version of me
Back when I was a tsunami of awkward
moments
Splashing against the shoreline called
__________.
A young lady, who introduced my jaw to the floor whenever she floated into our first period classroom.

This girl, she was a dandelion seed straddling a wish, a dream i never thought would turn flesh and green, but wire hangers like me
We don’t become captain of the football team because the only thing that we are good at is stopping ourselves from saying ‘I like you’ to a girl that holds the remote control to our smiles so we are just blurry silhouettes against the backdrop of everything popular often wearing our skin like a costume of someone we didn’t feel, comfortable pretending to be anyway.
We swallow earthquakes, and then shrivel at the smell of perfume
We got bashful, we got tongue tied
And we got nervous in high definition
So the question is, if a boy falls for a girl that’s out of his league and there’s no one around to hear him.
Does he make a sound?
The answer…the answer is ‘hell’ and the first two letters of ‘nothing’

When I was a senior in high school, I was a pocket full of chalk dust.
I was elevator music on a CD that stuttered like a volkswagen with a really bad transmission.
At this age, I was a ballot box stuffed full of everyone’s opinions except for my own.
My swagger was like watching a walkman trying to swallow a DVD.
At this age, my mouth was a door with hinges covered in rust and I walked as if I was concerned with how the ground would feel about my footsteps
And if I could just find a way to write a letter to that boy who was in an old sweater with itchy sleeves that I will someday grow out of.
I would say, I would say there will be days when you feel like a peacock with no feathers.
Like you are flightless, and undeserving of attention.
But listen, you have to stop getting out of bed like an oil spill.
You’re not a flat tire at 2 am, so stop acting like an accident.
You’re not an accident, you’re not a fucking accident Rudy!

You’re an apple on a pine tree in a room full of lemons
And you come from a long line,
And you come from a long line of Swiss army pocket knives
Men who are small, sharp, and dangerous when not handled carefully
Some days I wish that my arms were 12 years long so I could reach all the way back there and grab you by the shoulders, shake you, and say
Listen… you are the main character in a movie that I watch
Every time I see the inside of my eyelids
I told myself a million times that I wouldn’t spoil the ending
But I will tell you this, your story starts off really slow…
But it does get better, and you don’t have to believe me
Someday you’ll see for yourself

And when you see _________ at the senior prom, ignore the washing machine in your stomach.
Tell her she looks beautiful tonight, Extend your arm like a drawbridge to a castle
That no one has visited in years, and say
'Will you dance with me?

Outfit || Mod Chic x Grey.

Friday, 6 March 2015
In my last post, I mentioned that I collaborated with a really cool brand and if you follow me on Instagram, you probably have been seeing some sneak peeks.
Grey is a fashion design label that I'm quite familiar with being a model and all (I worked with them previously here)
I also have a little girl crush on one of the ladies that work with them but that's a story for another day.
So when I got an email asking if I was interested in collaborating with them, of course I was excited!
I was given a piece from their new collection to style and add my own unique twist to it.

I couldn't make the bloggers event they put together because I had exams on the planned date so I went over to the store two days after and as expected most of the outfits were already picked.
I was stuck between this shift dress and a really pretty floral wrap dress.
Ended up picking this mostly because I have this super cool nude brogues my aunt got me that I'm yet to wear and I thought I could style the dress with it but that didn't work out as planned so I moved on to plan B.

I'm a huge fan of the socks and heels trend although I've never tried it out.
Got this socks just a day before I had the shoot, I was going for the frilly type of socks but couldn't find that.
I'm wearing a sleeveless white shirt inside and I kind of feel like there's this Mod 60's chic vibe going on there, no? The mini shift dress, classic up swept hair, big sunglasses? Seeing it now?

I actually like the turn out a whole lot!
Always feels good experimenting with new styles and ways to add funk to an outfit
What do you guys think?

Update || Life Lately

Wednesday, 4 March 2015
Hey guys,
How's your week coming along?
So I just realized that I haven't done a life update post in a while and that's so not good.
Here's a bit of what's been going on with me of late.

SCHOOL.
I rounded up the last bit of end of posting exams in medical school last week (whoop!) and my final exams start in two weeks.
I've been more stressed and frustrated of late because all I want to do honestly is sit my ass at home and study all day but my school isn't making it easy on us at all.
Its one day, one trouble *sigh*
They have us still chasing signatures in order to be able to make attendance to write the exams like its our fault we couldn't go to school during the ebola outbreak but like my classmates and everyone around me keeps saying "It is well" but I need you guys to love me with prayers this time around please.

BLOG LIFE
Regardless of all the chaos and the pile of books I have currently taking a huge space on my bed, I'm trying to also keep my blog life alive and post at least once or twice a week because I know how hard it is to get back after a particularly long time off.
Its all about finding balance and I'm determined to do just that!
However, I won't be blogging during the actual exam week (as expected anyways)
Hopefully when all that is done and over, all the plans and new segments I'll like to start up will be put into action.
Outfit Posts too will be a bit slow because I mostly take outfit posts when I'm actually going out. As you can tell I won't be doing a lot of going out anytime soon but I'm trying to at least shoot one outfit post a week, mostly on sundays because i get to go to church.
I'm just really thankful for my awesome new photographer for making life a lot easier for me.

Also, I recently collaborated with the brand "Grey" (picture up there) and I can't wait to share that with you guys later in the week.

SET LIFE

When you're a broke undergraduate like me, you learn to really balance all the aspects of your life and also give space here and there for the side that brings in a little source of money.
I had this shoot sometime last month and these are just some behind the scene shots.
Definitely no more shoots for me anytime soon, finals no be rice and extra meat.

LEISURE
Not like I have any 'leisure time' but for lack of a better word.
I went to see Kingsman the movie after my last end of posting exam.
I just needed to relax and have a bit of me time but ended up going with my room mate. I still sat alone though and I had a great time! Great movie!
I started going to the movies alone sometime last year and I can't tell you guys how therapeutic and relaxing it is! I used to be of the mind that it is absolutely weird to go alone but all that has changed.
What do you think about going to the cinema alone? Yay or Nay?

LESSONS.

I think that the most important lesson that I've learnt in this final year and especially during this exam period is that you're truly OYO (on your own) in this life so you have to learn to fend for yourself real well.
Also you'll get the most love from people you least expect.
I'm just so thankful for those classmates that can still take a little time out of their own busy schedules to ask about my wellbeing, how my reading is going and also answer all my plenty foolish questions sometimes.
This has taught me to also be nice to people and ask randomly about their wellbeing and basically try and be the best I can to everyone. Not so easy because I can be a moody person at times but I'm definitely a work in progress.

So what have you guys been up to lately? Any new movies, books, places? Please share!

Happy new month guys!
P.S - I just want to say thank you to you all! For all the love and feedback I get here! It really keeps me going and makes me even put in this much effort Thank You!

How To Take Better Flat-Lay Pictures - The Plain Background x Extra Tips From A Pro.

Sunday, 1 March 2015
If there's one thing that's key to a blogger, its taking visually appealing images for your blog or instagram!
Flat lay photos (that's what the type of picture I have up there is called) have become a thing on instagram.
They are even more important to bloggers, especially bloggers who do posts like product reviews, haul posts, beauty essentials, current favourites and the like as they'll have to capture these items in an appealing way.

Now, there are a few other things that go into taking a perfect flatlay but I'll be focusing on the background/backdrop

Most of you might already know this but I'm hoping there are a few others like me back then who haven't been able to put two and two together and are still wondering how to get the perfect background for their flatlays
(Back in my novice days, I used the rug in the sitting room and it was a struggle! Someone could have told me this earlier - see that picture here)

The first time Kachy told me about using her white towel as backdrop, I was like Yoooo! Why didn't I ever think about that?!
But hey what if your towel has seen better days like mine and isn't nearly as white as it should be? Lol, jk
I did that once
but it wasn't exactly working out fine for me so i started using ankara materials as my backdrop and it was pretty cool! (Like in this post and this)
The only problem is sometimes you just need a plain background because all that ankara prints might clash with the items you're photographing.
A friend casually mentioned cardboards one day and I ran to get some immediately!
A few Testing testing shots
Can you tell I'm in love with the yellow the most?
PROS - Cardboards are cheap, you can get a variety of colors (even black) and you don't have to worry about anything competing with the items you're photographing!

I also got a pro in the b'ness "Ian Audifferen" to share some of his tricks.
In case you don't know him, Ian is the brain behind the @bytzar brand! Everything he does just screams creativity! From his design label to his Instagram - He takes really cool pictures with great aesthetics.
Just peep his insta feed
Here's what he had to say :
- Taking pictures with good aesthetics isn't as hard as it may seem, there really isn't much involved and you don't have to be a photographer.
- You just have to pay attention to details a lot and have a creative eye and an open mind as most of the pictures he takes aren't what people will notice on a regular day
- Find a good and interesting background (Thankfully, I just had that covered right?). White always works and gives off a minimalist vibe but adding colour can make it interesting too.
- Photo Editing apps come in handy too! The applications he uses include Afterlight, VSCOcam, EyeEm and SKRWT.

Was this post helpful? What are some other things you like to use for your flat lay background ?
