My Blogging Process

Friday, 29 August 2014

Inspired by Kristabel, I decided to share my blogging process right from sourcing for inspiration, developing on it, taking pictures to the final posting.
Things around here are definitely beginning to take more shape and have more definition than back when I started although not as highly organized as it can get because I see so many blogging apps and gadgets and i'm like Kermit, sipping my tea and just observing. lol. It has gotten a bit deeper to be honest, its like a child that i'm in charge of and consistently have to keep feeding and helping grow.

These days my blog is never too far from my head, I'm constantly thinking of the next post or some changes to make. Most of my posts come from 4am reflections and personal/life relations like that post on settling and never second guessing your style/self because of other's opinions, because of that I have my jotter and you can find me scribbling insanely into it whenever jolts of idea pops into my head. I definitely endorse getting a book for your blog. I also get ideas from the instagram, my environment ( trust me, there's inspiration to be gotten everywhere if only you open your eyes and ears), talks with people and reading other blogs, I'm an avid blog reader. Lol. I read all types from fashion to life to even mummy blogs, but these days life and school seems to be taking up much of my free time and that has reduced greatly. At the moment I have a long list of post ideas that I'm slowly working my way through and thanks to mide coker I'm thinking of adding reviews (places, services etc) to my blog.

UPDATED : Now I'm a bit more organized and I've evolved since I first wrote this post. I got tired of having my jottings everywhere and getting confused, so I make use of my blog planner to help simplify the whole process.

There's still a major deficit in this department, I mostly just go with the flow ( I don't have a layed out scheme) because sometimes I plan outfits with the aim of taking blog pictures but then I don't find a photographer that day *sucks*. I try to make a list (mostly mental list) of what type of post should go up when so that I don't have similar posts too close together. I've noticed people prefer my outfit posts so i try to break random/life posts with  fashion inspiration/outfit posts.

UPDATED : Thanks to my blog planner , the deficit i mentioned in this area is no more. I plan posts and even looks to shoot.

I use a canon rebel xs which I still haven't mastered after two years shamefully, so most of my pictures are shot in automatic (I'm currently learning how to shoot in manual mode though). Finding people to help me take pictures and also finding a good location is a major problem. My classmates or anyone I can cajole into helping me take pictures play photographer for the day but of late I've been employing (well not really) the services of a proper photographer -seyifunmi and you may have noticed the change in my pictures of recent. When I'm at home, I'm stuck because my sister doesn't really  and that's after her grumbling and me pleading. Oh the struggle.
I'm more of a shoot and go person, definitely not a perfectionist when it comes to taking pictures.  If I get four/five great shots I call it a day. I've stopped bothering about how sleepy my eyes appear sometimes or my forehead reflecting the sun. On rare occasions I use my techno F7 like in old school vibe when I didn't come out with my camera and I suddenly decide that my outfit is actually bloggable. The picture quality isn't anything though

Related : How to take good blog photos with your phone

Might come as a shocker but till date I haven't figured out photoshop so I use the outdated but still extremely useful picasa to edit my pictures. I really don't do much to them, just the basic crop, making a collage, saturate and of course water mark.

I write most of my posts in the memo pad of my blackberry, and then email it to myself on my other phone which I use to do most of my blogging these days. The writing takes most of my time especially when it comes to personal posts, It can take me days to weeks to complete them. I usually just start it in my memo pad however it comes. Its a mess at the beginning phase so I just leave it that way to revisit later when I find the right words to complete it and this is mostly at night when I'm all done with reading my books and I'm laying in bed. For the outfit posts, its a bit easier although I have days when I'm so tired and brain fagged that I just want to upload pictures, drop a line or two and dissapear.
Again, sometimes a starting line might come into my head randomly during the day. I jott that down and start to build from there, it usually gets easier once I start. Thinking up titles takes up additional time

I hardly use a laptop anymore, i use the laptop mainly for editing and on those rare days when my mum pays for the wifi. lol. These days I use my techno F7 and mobile data to do my blogging, its a bit time consuming and tiring to be honest, waiting for pictures to upload and sometimes and i have to write everything from the scratch (typing with touch screen is so annoying).
Thats about it!

Outfit || Five Tips For Dressing On A Lazy Day

Saturday, 23 August 2014
These past two weeks have been a bit slow school-wise due to the doctors strike and that amongst other things mean I can get to lose the smart dressing for a while which is good news to me because I'm really a lazy dresser. Most days I just want to throw on a tee and denim pants and head out but here’s the thing about being a "fashion person"— its a bit hard to turn off the impulse to infuse a little bit of style to an outfit even if you wanted to! ( I guess this fact already rules out every claim I have to being normcore"). Although this also gets tiring sometimes and I damn it all and dress very random. Lol
This is an outfit sometime last month (I think), Ididn't have much to do except pop into school to handle hostel matter - Yup! It was a lazy day.

Tip 1 : Think Comfort!  It should be something real easy to wear and comfortable. That's why my harem pants does it for me! Easy to wear *check*, comfort level -100 *check*  . Statement/graphic tees, oversized tops/danshikis and of course good ol' boyfriend jeans are great selections for a lazy day.
Here I'm wearing a graphic muscle tee that i got from my lovely roommate.

Tip 2 : Wear a Hat! You can pull on a fedora or wide brimmed hat. They never fail to add spice to an outfit, and especially saves you time and energy fussing over your hair. I'm wearing my wine red eze cap, I styled the black in this post and I did an inspiration post on it too

Tip 3 : Flats! But of course right?  Mine is pretty boring but there are so many quirky flats these days that can also add spice to your outfit. (Think oxfords, sporty slipons, ankle strap flats even birkenstocks)

Tip 4 : Shade on!  This might also just be an excuse to let your face breath. A pair of sunglasses and bold lips and you're good to go!

Tip 5 : Bag It! I love crossbody bags, i think they have a way of making an outfit look not to serious. Tote bags are also good for a lazy day

So there we have it, my five tips for lazy day dressing that can also be applied for weekends. What's your go to piece of clothing on lazy days?

StyleCrush || Aimee Song

Wednesday, 20 August 2014
How have i been sleeping on "Aimee Song" of Song of style for this long?  Oh Noo! Of course i don't mean i don't know who she is, that will be like a fashion blogging crime because she's one of the top tier fashion bloggers out there.
I've always known of her but for some reason i just didnt bother with checking up her site and following her religiously. I have this stereotyped view (i know its totally wrong) of top fashion blogs, i feel like i wouldnt get so much street style and inspiration there, just really expensive dresses and shoes that i can't recreate but Aimee Song actually does have style! I love how laid back but really stylish she is. I've definitely learnt my lesson on putting people into stereotypes.
Speaking of stereotypes, i've definitely had my own share of that. People always and i mean always figure they can categorize me. Recently i told someone i don't really drink alcohol and she went on about how that's impossible, me being a model and all. Maybe i should finally put up that post in my drafts of misconceptions about models.
What do you think?

Poetry || Anis Mojgani

Sunday, 17 August 2014

Yet another beautiful poetry find and because i feel like I'm so at peace these days that i fear i'm beginning to forget how much of a mess i was and how dark and gloomy my days were. I mean what's the use of getting through the dark if you can't go back to let others know that there's truly light at the end of the tunnel? This is what I'm here for, to share experiences and lessons and hope that i reach to someone out there. This way the pain makes a little bit more sense.
I actually don't know what this poem is called but i stumbled on it recently. I hope you enjoy it and it touches you as much as it touched me .

This is for the fat girls.
This is for the little brothers.
This is for the school-yard wimps, this is for the childhood bullies who tormented them.
This is for the former prom queen, this is for the milk-crate ball players.
This is for the nighttime cereal eaters and for the retired, elderly Wal-Mart store front door greeters. Shake the dust.
This is for the benches and the people sitting upon them,
for the bus drivers driving a million broken hymns,
for the men who have to hold down three jobs simply to hold up their children,
for the nighttime schoolers and the midnight bike riders who are trying to fly. Shake the dust.
This is for the two-year-olds who cannot be understood because they speak half-English and half-god. Shake the dust.
For the girls with the brothers who are going crazy,
for those gym class wall flowers and the twelve-year-olds afraid of taking public showers,
for the kid who’s always late to class because he forgets the combination to his lockers,
for the girl who loves somebody else. Shake the dust.
This is for the hard men, the hard men who want to love but know that it won’t come.
For the ones who are forgotten, the ones the amendments do not stand up for.
For the ones who are told to speak only when you are spoken to and then are never spoken to. Speak every time you stand so you do not forget yourself.
Do not let a moment go by that doesn’t remind you that your heart beats 900 times a day and that there are enough gallons of blood to make you an ocean.
Do not settle for letting these waves settle and the dust to collect in your veins.
This is for the celibate pedophile who keeps on struggling,
for the poetry teachers and for the people who go on vacations alone.
For the sweat that drips off of Mick Jaggers’ singing lips and for the shaking skirt on Tina Turner’s shaking hips, for the heavens and for the hells through which Tina has lived.
This is for the tired and for the dreamers and for those families who’ll never be like the Cleavers with perfectly made dinners and sons like Wally and the Beaver.
This is for the biggots,
this is for the sexists,
this is for the killers.
This is for the big house, pen-sentenced cats becoming redeemers and for the springtime that always shows up after the winters.
This? This is for you.
Make sure that by the time fisherman returns you are gone.
Because just like the days, I burn both ends and every time I write, every time I open my eyes I am cutting out a part of myself to give to you.
So shake the dust and take me with you when you do for none of this has never been for me.
All that pushes and pulls, pushes and pulls for you.
So grab this world by its clothespins and shake it out again and again and jump on top and take it for a spin and when you hop off shake it again for this is yours.
Make my words worth it, make this not just another poem that I write, not just another poem like just another night that sits heavy above us all.
Walk into it, breathe it in, let is crash through the halls of your arms at the millions of years of millions of poets coursing like blood pumping and pushing making you live, shaking the dust.
So when the world knocks at your front door, clutch the knob and open on up, running forward into its widespread greeting arms with your hands before you, fingertips trembling though they may be in gratitude

There has been so much talk on suicide lately but I don't think people understand just how real depression is. If you ever need to talk or just need a friend ( I was totally kidding about the 6ft thing, you don't have to be 6ft to be my friend. Lol)  please don't hesitate to send me an

Hair Update : Getting Kinky ( Senegalese Twists)

Friday, 15 August 2014
Look who finally made up her mind and got her hair braided?
I've been meaning to get braids for a while now but I kept on procastinating it. My final push came while on my way out to school one fine afternoon, I caught a glimpse of myself in a car mirror and my hair wasn't working AT ALL!  I looked tired and beat up, so I put my school (i actually didnt have any class) on hold and called the hair dresser and the rest is history.
This is my first time doing senegalese twists ( i just found out thats what this particular type of twist is called, the other types are the marley and havana twist), I usually stick to reddish brown box braids but change never hurts right?
I haven't really been styling it, just either packing it all up in a bun or letting in down. Letting my hair out of a weave made me realize that i have dandruff :(. Please guys, what can i do about this because shampooing and washing didn't do the job.
Also do you have any styling suggestions for me or you've written a post on it? Please leave me your comments and your links. Thank You!

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Outfit || Bow Tied II

Monday, 11 August 2014
I doubt if my love for bow ties will ever wane although i haven't been wearing much of it of recent. Its approximately a year from today that i last  put on a bow tie (in this post ) which is not too cool because i used to be a bow tie advocate for girls. Another thing i haven't been wearing of recent too is headwraps, i used to be quite the turban queen. 2013! Ah good old fashion days. This year has found me a bit more conventional and less quirky which i can't really explain how that happened. Old age?
Oh well, i finally decided to pull a "cassie daves" last week sunday and go full on androgyny. This also gave me the chance to bring out the bow tie to play. i got the waist coat as an early birthday gift last year from my sweet heart roommate, thank you mariam!
Extra Bow-Tie Tip :
Find one without a strap (Or take out the strap from yours or you can make a DIY bowtie) and wear pinned to the side of your shirt instead.

I'm starting my surgery posting today, it seems like just the other day i was talking about the beginning of the end of my med school journey and now i'm already in my third posting and even though this ongoing doctors strike is affecting our clinicals, i'm happy that we'll still keep forging ahead regardless.
I hope you all have a wonderful week and remember to remain health/hygiene conscious (because with this ebola reign of terror, shit just got too real)

You can check out some of my previous outfit posts where i'm rocking a head wrap/ turban (and in different ways) :
-Its a wrap

Half Of A Yellow Sun Notes

Friday, 8 August 2014

And so it happens that as I lay sprawled on my sister's bed, my mind keeps revisiting words from Chimamanda's half of a yellow sun which my friend handed me a week ago saying ''Here, I knew you'll love to read it". Of course I would. I finished the book in one day and a half.

- Love comes first and then the reasons for loving follows

- Why do you need so much outside of yourself? Why isn't what you are enough?

This is what I know :
* Love is unpredictable and so sometimes the fireworks and butterflies don't come first like you imagined but rather the reasons for loving comes first, then the love follows.

* Although you swear you're content with who you are, sometimes you find yourself wishing you could be a little bit more free spirited, a little bit more spontaneous and that your laugh came a little bit easier but most times you are fine with who you are and even revel in it. Does this still count as a "why isn't what you are enough" situation ?

What do you know/think?

Outfit || Almost White Out x Rerocking Tips

Tuesday, 5 August 2014
Hey Guys!
I hope you all had a lovely weekend?
Firs off, i just want to say thank you so so much for all the positive comments i got on my last post . You guys might probably think I'm exaggerating but forreal i was like "omg i have like the best blog readers ever" all weekend (and i'm not the time to gush and omg over things .lol). Sometimes a gentle reminder is all one needs you know? So No! I won't be going on a blog fast, not now anyways.

Okay now to today's b'ness!
Sometime last month, i decided to resurrect my white shirt and pleat skirt again!
I wore it last year here, remember?
White Out
and that's not to say i havben't been wearing them as separates this year but this time around i decided to wear them together again. Of course, I've made it no secret that I'm a bit of a repeat offender. As a university student living on a budget, I can't promise you glamorous designer outfits and shoes but i can definitely promise you an interesting journey (In the words of Tiwi)
Who made the rule that you can't wear an outfit more than once anyways?
But instead of the  "all white" look, i decided to introduce a bit of brown and mustard. I got my ankara bangle from my friend "Oma", its a shame she doesn't make them anymore. She had some really cool stuffs!
Notice the difference in picture quality between this one and the previous one? Yes!! I finally found myself a photographer and an amazing one at that plus he was superpatient with all my awkwardness. lol. Thank You Seyi!

You can check his work out:
Instagram : @theseyifunmi
Site : Seyifunmiphotography.

- Give it a new look with different accessories
- Allow a reasonable amount of time pass before re-rocking

Okay, that's all i got!  If you have any other tips, please share!!

Outfit || Retro Vibes

Friday, 1 August 2014
I look like i have "bronze baby syndrome" in these pictures. Not so flattering but i figured i could only keep it in my drafts for so long before i finally give in to the pressure and put it up. I quite like the pose though especially the one where I'm laughing. That was a candid shot, getting me to laugh when taking pictures isn't an easy feat. I'm always
This was my outfit to the mente de moda event, I'm wearing one of my all time favorite vintage dress that i picked up a couple of years back at a ridiculous bargain price. I would have loved to say something along the lines of how "Oh the brogues wasn't planned, it was something i just decided to try on that day and it worked" but in this case it was very much planned. haha
Infact, this mix has been in my head for a while and i thought about how cool it is that i can get to mix two things that show a bit of my style so easily :vintage and androgyny. #Winning

I also would have loved to talk about the occasional blue spells I get into these days thinking of quitting my blog and how I might have lost my flair but its a beautiful morning so instead i'll talk about just how amazing it is that its already august! I'm thankful for a brand new day and month, thankful that it's friday and of course for you amazing people that continually stick around and read my blog.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and a happy new month!
